  • TotalTunes Control – Pick of the Week

    2

Update: At the time this was published, TotalTunes Control was free.  With their latest version, 2.2, they have decided to change it to shareware and charge 8 bucks for it.  I will leave it up to you decide if it is worth that or not.

I wanted to fully test this before making it my pick of the week, so that is the reason for the delay.  I lucked out because this program best defines the pick of the week in replacing two programs I had been using with one and still being free.  TotalTunes Control allows you to control iTunes from a smaller interface, but also does much more.  TotalTunes Control duplicates the YouControl Tunes interface of being able to control iTunes from the menu bar and duplicates the iScobbler last.fm client to post my songs to last.fm.  Add to all this the ability to control iTunes through keyboard shortcuts from whatever program I am in, and you have a fantastic program.

  • Drupal – Pick of the Week

    0

A day late, but this week's pick of the week is Drupal.  You might find it odd seeing both WordPress and Drupal as picks of the week, but it is my opinion that they each excel at different things.  WordPress does blogs fantastically, Drupal does the same for community sites.  Yes you could do a blog in Drupal and a community site in WordPress, but why stretch a product to do something when there is a fantastic alternative out there.

Because of my recent work on a soon to be unveiled HD Music Exchange, I was enamored with Drupal's flexibility for creating a community site.  With any flexibile product, there are a number of ways to do similar things.  Luckily Drupal makes it easy to try things out and get to a product that really works well.  If you have to build a community web site, I highly recommend looking at Drupal.  A note, for now you might want to stick with version 5 instead of 6 because many of the modules have not been ported over yet.

  • Sun Giant – Album of the Week

I am cheating this week with only an EP, but people need to hear the band Fleet Foxes in any way possible.  Unfortunately until their album comes out, this is the only way possible.  Using lots of reverb mixed with soothing vocals, this will be 20 minutes of joy for you.  As an added bonus, it is available on Amazon MP3 for just $2.99.  If you like music and have 3 bucks, I emplore you to check this out.  I don't think you will be disappointed.

Album of the Week is my way of highlighting albums both new and old that I think are worth checking out.  You can find an archive of services and software at http://www.marktopia.net/tag/aotw/.

  • National Teams

    World Cup

Even the most casual sports person is probably aware of the World Cup.  The World Cup is held every 4 years with the winner being crowned the top national team in the world with the last champion being Italy in 2006.  National teams are comprised only of players from that nation, much like an Olympic team.  Also like the Olympics, the location moves throughout the world.  The 2010 World Cup will be hosted in South Africa.

What some people may not know is that the World Cup tournament, or final, is preceded by World Cup qualifying.  The qualifying starts about 2 and a half years before the final and is broken into the different regions of the world, Europe, Africa, Asia & Oceania, South America and North, Central America & the Caribbean.  Each region has a different number of teams able to qualify.  Each region also uses different processes to qualify for the final tournament.

    Regional Tournaments

In addition to the World Cup, each region also hosts tournaments for national teams.  An example of this is the UEFA European Football Championships, also known as the EURO.  Each region decides the frequency of their tournaments separately.

  • Soccer Guide

Being a primary member of The Content Webring, I take some ounce of pride in announcing a new content module for my site.  Looking at the Non-Blog Content of the site, you will now see An American's Guide to Soccer listed.  If you are someone who wants to know more about soccer, as new or longtime fan or just someone who wants to know what the hubbub is all about, I hope you will find this a useful resource.

Right now the introduction is complete, but I plan on rolling out the rest of the sections over the course of the next week.  I do not plan on posting here about when each section is complete, but I will post to my Twitter account, so you can follow that if you want to know when each section is posted.
