  • They Have Come….To Our Shitay

    0

As you may have heard, there is some sporting event happening here in town tomorrow night.? After some luck, I was able to get tickets for the game and will be viewing it from the 11 row behind the north end zone at Kinnick.? I will also be wearing the shirt below to the game, hopefully in the middle of a bunch of OSU fans.

With the Game of the Week, Iowa City also plays host to College Gameday.? I have posted some setup pictures of Gameday on my Flickr account, but for those of you too lazy to go there, you can see that the setup is taking up most of Hubbard Park.

I am predicting a close game with both Tate and Smith making some big plays.? I don't want to pick a winner in fear of offending the football gods, I just want a good game.? That being said, I am leaving everyone with this Moment of Zen.
  • Trying to be anti-Mircosoft

With getting my Mac back with a new hard drive, I have been installing software on a need to use basis.? It has taken about a week, but I finally got around to needing a Microsoft Office program, specifically Excel.? I was in a meeting at the time, so there was a minor panic moment.? I then remembered that I have access to Google Spreadsheets somehow, so I decided to give that a whirl.? It opened the Excel document without problem, so at that point I thought about not installing Office and seeing if I can get by without it.? From Google I have Writely and Spreadsheet to cover Word and Excel.? I am also using Apple Mail, so that covers Entourage for Mail and I have Outlook Web Access to manage my Exchange calendar.? I am also considering using Google Calendar in conjunction with my Exchange calendar to see how that goes.? I hardly ever use PowerPoint, so I am not really concerned about that.? I think I can make it work, but I would be interested to hear other opinions about my plan.

  • Macbook Back Again

    1

For those of you unaware, I had to send my Macbook back to Apple again for the same shutting down problem I had before. This time it took nearly 2 weeks for me to get it back instead of the 3 days, but hopefully it means it is fixed now. One of the things they had to replace was the hard drive, so I have a pristine system with all my data missing. Luckily I backed up the good stuff before hand so it is no big deal, but it did give me an opportunity to see what applications are most important to me based on the order of installation on a new machine. Without further ado:

    1. Firefox
    2. OS Software Updates
    3. Adium
    4. Growl
    5. Shrook
    6. Quicksilver
    7. TextMate

I also removed Garageband and it's music files to clear up about 5 GB of space. I also had to configure Mail and the Address Book for the University stuff, messed with the Finder windows so they open in the column view and shrunk the desktop icons to 32x32 instead of 48x48. It is nice to be back at home on the Mac.

    1. Music Database Full

      0

My music database has been finished off, filling it up with all sorts of good data.? I should say that the albums are all in there, I have not filled in all of the artist info at this time, and it may be awhile before doing that.? However, I am pleased to be done with the data entry part of the project and can now start thinking about other stuff I want to do with the MizCD project and start working on the comics database.? Unfortunately that is another monster on it's own that I will have to tackle, but at least the data entry involves going through all my comics, so that is kinda cool.

One other comment I will make, you may have noticed the Now Reading thing on the sidebar.? In addition to keeping track of what I am reading, the Now Reading also supports reviewing each book, so if you want my opinions on the books that show up in the sidebar, check out the library area of the site.

    2. Musically Inclined

      2

I am getting very close to finishing putting all my music in my MizCD collection.? I have about 50 CDs to go, so I am hoping to wrap that up in the next day or so.? This is serving two purposes, I am avoiding my comic project and I can see what other features might be nice for MizCD now that it is almost full.? The first thing I was thinking was a "cd player" view.? Since the project was to organize my CD player, it might be nice to view what is in the CD player with some cool interface.? We will see, I figure that if I have all those album covers in there, why not try to do something cool with them.

Also, I have decided to tackle a little project for myself that does not include any programming.? The first concert I really remember going to was the first Q101 Jamboree in on May 27, 1995.? It was the first festival show that Q101 put on and to this day I remember so many cool things about it.? Seeing KMFDM play their full album in about 45 minutes, watching a friend get dropped crowd surfing on concrete, crowd surfing myself when we were bored by Faith No More, being pretty impressed with Sponge live, and the general experience of chilling out in the lawn of the New World Music Theatre.? Because of the impression it left on me, I am going to gather all of the albums that each of the bands had out at that time so I can have a collection of the show for my memory.? Part of that includes finding out which bands played there and since the Internet was of no help, I sent Q101 an e-mail, so hopefully in the next couple of days I will have an update.
