  • Soccer Surprise

    1

Last night I knew that Everton was going to be playing Columbus of the MLS, but I did not think it was televised anywhere I could see, so I had reserved myself to that fact.? After dinner last night, I did some flipping of the channels and to my delight the match was being shown on ESPN2, so I got to watch the entire thing.? I was pleased with some of the play of Everton, however there was a lot of the match where they looked like a team that was getting back into sync.? I cannot say I am pleased about the result with a 1-1 tie, however since Columbus has been playing for half of a season and it is still preseason for the EPL, I can accept the result.? Needless to say, this did get me just a little more excited for the beginning of the league.

  • Comics Database, And This Time I Mean It

    13

Ok, I have nothing else to get in my way now, with the exception of reading, the Wesley Acres web site and finishing Paper Mario, of starting and finishing my comics database program. I am thinking it is going to take a few steps before the programming happens, such as determining what data to collect, what features I want and then designing the database. During this time, I have lost my mind and am allowing you to determine what language I will be programming it in.? The choices are listed below:

    • Plain PHP - Similar to the MizCD project, I would do the entire thing in straight PHP.
    • PHP Framework - I would choose one of the popular PHP frameworks, such as CakePHP, Symfony, Zend, or something like that.? This would allow me to program in a framework setting but in the familiar PHP.
    • Ruby on Rails - This would force me to put up my dukes and take on Rails head on.

I am pretty open to other suggestions as well, as long as they will run on my web host.? This probably means no ASP.NET, I think.? Use the sidebar widget to vote, the polls will remain open as long as it take for me to come up with the features and database design.

  • Paper Robots

    2

After seeing Rebekah's post about the paper Mac and then seeing Scott's rather sad looking paper Macs, I decided to post my old photos of the paper robot collection I made back in the summer of 03.? The ones I made were a collection of robots, one for each letter of the alphabet, however not really associated with the specific letter.? In any case, my Flickr account now has a set dedicated to the paper robots, so enjoy.

  • Piss Off Liverpool!

    1

Taking Sports Guy's lead, I have decided to find myself an EPL team to dedicate my time to. As if I didn't have enough sports going on with Iowa, the Bucs, Cubs, occasional Formula 1, I decided that I also need to start watching English Premier League Soccer. So after reading through his reviews of each team and doing minor investigative work myself, I have chosen to support Everton for this season. Any team that can be described as being similar to the Oakland A's, I am OK with. Making it easy to follow the team, I have the main Everton RSS feed and the BBC Everton news loaded up in Shrook and have the Everton schedule saved on my del.icio.us account. Combine that with the Fox Soccer Channel and I should have some fun following my new favorite team.

  • Travel Blog – UWM

Friday 8:30 AM - Thunder is about in Milwaukee as the second day of the conference begins.? The second half of the day yesterday was spent going on a campus tour and then some roundtable discussions.? The discussions were pretty good, but the shocking part was on the campus tour.? We did the normal tour stuff, seeing labs and their Help Desk, but it also included a tour of their server room.? As in we were standing next to the e-mail server for their campus.? I was able to take a picture in there as well that I will post later tonight.? Today is going to be more breakout sessions, so we will see how that goes.? I am hoping to be home between 7-8 though.
Thursday 12:45 PM - The presentations this morning were pretty good. The biggest shock was to find that most of the other universities here are allowed to have their students work up to 40 hours a week instead of our 20. This is definitely a challenge that we would have to discuss when/if we want to implement a larger STS model. I asked one of the managers here at UWM and she said that she couldn't do her job if she was limited to 20 hours a week. Also, Virginia and I have had a number of good discussions, including an interesting support center idea for the library for some of the 3rd tier support issues we have. This afternoon includes more discussions and a campus tour.

Thursday 9 AM - Once again we have the travel blog, this time from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee for their STS Conference. Throughout the day I will be updating with information about the trip and conference. The trip up was rather uneventful with the exception of a closed ramp which caused us to take the scenic route around both the ghetto and nice area of Milwaukee. (Hint: They are right next to each other.) Then we found the hotel, but they have changed names recently which caused us to drive around a bit more. After all that, we made it fine and were in turn way early for the conference. Updates later after we get through some presentations and tours.
