  • CD Exchange 2006 – BradCD

This was the first real diverse CD I have experienced so far, a more world CD.? While I don't like all of the tracks on the CD, there are none that want me to turn it off, which is different than some of the CDs I have listened to.? The Simon Ritchie cover of Anarchy in the UK was rather interesting as was Colour Line by Asian Dub Foundation.? Another highlight from the CD is the Nitin Sahwney track, very interesting with great vocal work. I know that I am getting a bit nitpicky when I have to comment about a little lack of flow for the CD.? Another good outing by Brad in mixing up the CD Exchange some.

Before even getting started I see that this will be a short album, already a bonus in my book. We get two German tracks to start the album, the second of which is not quite safe for work. I was a bit sceptical until the third track gives us a little G&R. Things progress nicely from there, nothing I havn't heard before for a few tracks including some Bjork and Blondie. We then get into the Faktion which sounds a little like Linken Park. There was a copy of a song off my CD, Imagine by A Perfect Circle, which also shows good taste by Warren. All in all, not too shabby.

In the midst of the CD Exchange, I didn't think I would want to write about anything other than the CDs, it turns out this is false. First, for the MizCD stuff, I have hit a bit of a roadblock in that I don't really feel like finishing it in the state it is currently in. This is partially because I lost my test bed due to a messed up WAMP install and don't want to deal with trying to fix it. This also meant I lost my test data. I am not trashing what I have, but I am looking down a new avenue.

Now I will readily admit that I have knocked Ruby as much as the next person. I have found dealing with a pain especially because there are no great tutorials for it. I now hope that has changed, Apple has released a tutorial on setting up Ruby on Rails on a Mac OS X environment. Similiar to the IBM AJAX instructions, these look pretty good (ie not someone's blog). I am working through the install of the environment now and hope to report back within the next week or so to let people know how it is going.

The second thing I was thinking about was the idea of what happens when I get the chance to purchase a new desktop PC. Some of this will depend on what happens between now and then, but there is part of me that thinks experimenting with doing an all open source machine would be cool. I know this would be a lot of research and work, but since building a machine from scratch isn't the project it used to be, how bout a home built Linux machine instead. I am open to people's experiences with this and what they think of this idea, so feel free to sound off.

If going by the beginning and end of this CD, I would say that Josh is an angry person. I am a little afraid of writing something bad on here in fear that he will cut me with a shank. Actually, there was a girl that worked at the Help Desk that many people had that fear of, but that is besides the point. Any CD that starts off with a 3 minute Dust Brothers recap of Fight Club means some business. I almost wanted to punch myself as I was enjoying a Diet Pepsi, eating a Fudge Round with a candle going in the apartment. In any case, this CD isn't really my cup of tea, but it is nice to know that hard rock is still being made and that there are plenty of angry people out there to listen to it. I am also disappointed not to hear any Sevendust on it as well.

Moving from the hardrock, we get into some hip-hop and rap, including a song about Internet chat rooms. At this point I will make the comment that not all of the CDs in the exchange are my favorites. I should also say though that I didn't dislike everything on this CD. I particularly liked the Common track and The Used track. I liked the more mellow songs, as to be expected from me, and the hard rock at the beginning did me in a bit. Overall not my favorite CD, but also not the most hated.

This CD is what I invision I might have listened to if I was 19 and in college still. Fairly well loaded with core-emo, this CD is not bad, but I have a feeling lots of people on the exchange won't like it. Some familiar bands to me, and probably many, Boards of Cananda and Jimmy Eat World, show up, so that is good. There are some bands on the CD that remind me of some of Hot Water Music or early Alkaline Trio, so that is a nice flashback for me. I will admit there is a lot more "uncontrolled" yelling than I would prefer, if that makes sense to anyone. The CD was also a bit long, but not excessively so, and admitted to by the creator.

In an interesting note about myself, I decided to check out the AllMusic Emo description to see how accurate I thought it was (it is pretty good by the way) and I noticed the random CDs at the bottom that are Emo Album Highlights. The first time around I noticed I had 2 of the CDs on there, I refreshed and found another one I have. I kept doing it and found that only once out of 10 times did I not own at least one album on there. I don't know what that means other that I used to really be into emo.
