  • Marktopia is born

    7

As you can see, this is my new site. With the major changes happening with this design, I wanted to go with a new domain name. So after 4 or so years, MyTungsten is retired and Marktopia is born. I would have gotten Marktopia.com, but someone else already has it. Unfortunately for them, they are now the second best Marktopia on the net. » Read the rest of the entry..

  • Alternate Simpsons Box

Simpsons Season 6 Alternate BoxSo here is the picture of the alternate box for Season 6 Simpsons DVD collection. For those of you unaware, Season 6 started shipping with a stupid plastic head of Homer. Apparantly they are going to do all of the family as these annoying heads instead of the original boxes. These heads do not stand up and cannot be put with an organized collection in any way. So I shelled out the 3 bucks to have a box similar to the other ones sent to me. It isn't quite the same since you just put the interior of the packaging from the plastic one into a box meant to handle it, but whatcha gonna do.

I will admit that I am not someone who picks up on all subtle things so I can't say whether there were a bunch of subtle things in this movie that I didn't pick up on or if this really just was the waste of 3 hours it seemed like. By the end of the movie, there were so many tragic characters, I wasn't sure if there was anyone happy left in the world. And not to ruin the end of the movie for those who havn't seen it, but what is the deal with the frogs? This movie didn't really entertain me, it just kind of bored me for 3 hours after I had watched the Hawkeyes lose earlier in the day. But hey, if you like lots of character development with no plot to direct it, by all means check this out.

  • Flocking to a new browser?

With all of the new web tech stuff that I have been looking at recently, another one has popped up on my radar called Flock. This is basically a version of Firefox that has been tweaked and added onto to somewhat integrate with social web services, such as del.icio.us and Flickr. My initial thoughts are, even if I didn't use any of the other features it would still be worth a look since it definately makes some improvements to the Firefox UI. But that wouldn't be too much fun to not investigate these social features, so here is a rundown of some of them that I have tried.

    • Blog PostingThis post is actually being written from within Flock's blog posting feature. It has all of the comforts of WordPress, however I do not have to load a different page. It also lets me take advantage of the Shelf. This is a clipboard sort of thing where you can store images and text, then drag them into the blog post and have Flock correctly make the links to the appropriate pictures. It also has a Topbar that lets you navigate through past posts to edit or view and add Flickr pictures based on a user or keyword. One note, the bulleted list feature isn't perfect.
    • CollectionsThere are so many things to go over here, I can't go over them all. Basically if you have a del.icio.us account, you can integrate your web browser favorites with those and then tag up your web browser favorites as well. You can then organize these into collections to keep them organized. Flock will also look for any feeds within those bookmarks and give you an RSS aggragation look. There is actually a lot more there and I am still exploring these features. The one thing with the RSS view is that it does not like directly to the entry, just to the main page for the site.
    • Other FeaturesFirst off, there is a built-in search of your Favorites and History that is a feature that I love. This by itself makes me want to keep using this. The Shelf is also pretty sweet for keeping track of things to add into your blog. I also like the drop down list of collections which allows you to navigate the sites in each collection easily.

Overall I think the concept is pretty cool. I will keep using this for a bit, so any other major things will be added to the post. If anyone else is trying this program out, I would love to hear feedback from you as well.

  • Blogging and a little something else

So I got Typo to install on my web site. For those interested in what it looks like, it is at http://www.mtungsten.net/typo/. I got all of my entries except for this one converted over easily enough and I really like the look and feel of the admin panel, but I don't have the CSS down yet for it and I have a lot of what Typo does on a new redesign of my WordPress install, so I am stuck on what to do. I would love to hear that WordPress has a 2.0 on the way with all sorts of new features, but I don't see that on the horizon. For now I stick with WordPress and continue working on the new design to see if I can get it where I want it.

But now on to my real rant, the World Series. I have been asked by family if I have jumped on the White Sox bandwagon yet, to which my reply is "Hell No." I should start by saying that my Dad is a White Sox fan. While he isn't diehard, I can tell that he doesn't enjoy cheering for the Cubs, even when they are winning. Now everytime we talk, I get a hearty "How bout the Sox" to which I sudder a bit inside. I was a Sox fan until about 10 years old, when after several family vacations to Toronto, became a Blue Jays fan. I still like the Jays, they are my AL team. But I also grew up watching plenty of WGN, so I was always aware of the Cubs, whether waiting to see if the Shawn-O-Meter got above .270, if Mark Grace was going to smoke on the field, or just waiting through another extra inning game waiting for Ducktails to start, I know some of the Cubs history. So when I started college, I got more into baseball and the Cubs because of Dan, my roommate, and have been diehard Cubs since. The last 7 years have been both good and bad being a Cubs fan, kind of a brief glimse into the world of a lifetime Cubs fan. Hope crashed down most every season, except for the "magical" wild card win or a blown 3-1 series lead, I am here and I am not going anywhere.

That gets us to Saturday, when for the first time in over 40 years, the World Series will be played in Chicago. Who will I be cheering for? Anyone but the White Sox. I hate the Cardinals, but at least those fans have some class. While I hate to admit it, they are like the older sibling, annoying and a bit of a bully, but somewhere there is a little bit of respect (except for Edmonds and LaRussa, those bastards can rot in hell). As of this writing (7th inning) it looks like the Astros are going to win, and as much as I dislike Biggio and Clemens, I can still cheer for them over the Sox.

So the point of this rant is to gather all Cubs fans together and force you to think, do you really want the White Sox to win? Is it worth having Chicago have a championship knowing that you can be harassed by a White Sox fan for as long as it takes for the Cubs to win? Do you want to say that it is fine to jump onto the field and tackle the Royals third base coach? Most importantly, do you EVER want to hear Hawk Harrellson proudly say "the World Champion Chicago White Sox?" Please Cubs fans, think about it and cheer the NL team no matter what.
