  • CD Collection

The first update on the software I am calling CD Collection is now here. The installation script is completed. I forgot how much work goes into some of the most basic stuff, I am trying to write the code to handle all of the errors I can think of, but I already know that I won't get them all. Luckily the installation script is fairly easy, so I don't think I have missed anything there. In any case, the install script now prompts for the database username, password, name and the number of slots in the CD player, then creates all of the tables needed for the database for the user. While it isn't much, it is the first step completed. I have made a web page for the project for those of you interested, it is at http://www.mytungsten.net/cdcoll.htm. I have written a basic outline of the steps I will take and put a change log up as well. I am open to any feedback people have about the project, so leave comments if you so choose.

As some of you may know, I have my CD collection online at http://www.mytungsten.net/cdcollection.php (This page has been taken down while development is being done). The problem with this is that it doesn't have each and every CD I own in it, only the ones in my 300 disc CD player. This is becoming more of a problem as I have over 300 CDs and when CDs are taken out, the database is not always updated. Therefore I have decided to redo the entire system to allow for CDs to be entered into the system and flagged if they are in the CD player or not, and if they are not in the CD player, where they are, such as my shelf or my car. This will take some work, but it has been awhile since I have gotten into some good PHP programming. Here are some other upgrades to the system that I want to do:

    • CD Cover Art
    • CD Notes
    • Links to other sites, such as AllMusic.com
    • Search for open spots in the CD player
    • Searching all fields for keywords

After I get this completed, I plan on offering it up as freeware to anyone who wants it. I also want to work on writing a widget for Dashboard that will allow you to checkout and return CDs without going out to the web. I am open to any other ideas for this project, so if you have any suggestions, I would love to hear them.

As many of you have seen, I host my pictures locally on MyTungsten using the Coppermine Gallery software. This is nice but not always conducive to adding more photos, so I have decided to look at some companies that host images either for free or pay. The first one, and hopefully only one, that I am trying is Flickr. There is a plugin for iPhoto that will allow you to export from there to your Flickr account, so I want to try that as well. I am hoping to label all of my photos on my Mac, then upload to Flickr and keep all of the labels and meta information. We will see how it works out, but if anyone has any suggestions or comments about Flickr or another company, I am open to suggestions.
