  • Acronym Contest

    2

I have decided that instead of doing a sign for the game, I can just use Jake as my whiteboard. He is a big guy so we will have him take his shirt off (watch out ladies) and then we need something witty to have written on there. Since the game is on ABC, we need some sort of acronym to work with that. Some suggestions have been:

    Always
    Better than
    Cyclones

    and

    dAmn
    Boise's
    Cold

So throw out your suggestions and I will check this sometime before the game.

No more blog posts for a few days as I am headed to Orlando for the Capital One Bowl. I am bringing my camera for lots of pictures of the bowl game, Universal Studios and Epcot Center. This blog will be back sometime late next week. Happy New Year's and Go Hawks!

  • The Shins – Oh, Inverted World (2001)

This is a fantastic album, for as long as it lasts. Clocking in at 33 minutes, this is not the most lengthy album out there, but luckily the quality of the album more than makes up for the length. This album has a wide variety of styles, but all are keyed with a melodic background. Songs like One By One All Day and New Slang show off group talent. This is my first exposure to the The Shins after a recommendation on AllMusic.com for related artists to Pinback and The American Analog Set. If you are into somewhat mellow rock, this is good stuff for you.

  • Modest Mouse – Good News for People Who Love Bad News (2004)

This album was highly recommended by a number of people and also commented on when I mentioned I was reviewing it. Unfortunately I cannot see the greatness in this album. Yes Float On is catchy and there are a couple of other surprising songs such as The World At Large and The Good Times are Killing Me, but beyond that I am hard pressed to say there are any other really good songs on the album. That being said, there are plenty of annoying songs, such as Bury Me With It and The Devil's Workday. The beginning of the album is a little stronger than the end, but as a whole this is more of a 3 song buy. I understand this was a down year for music, but I have to think there have to be much better albums out there.

Review for next week: The Shins - Oh, Inverted World (2001)

I am also accepting recommended albums to review as well, so post any recommendations in the comments area.

  • Social Distortion – Social Distortion (1990)

Early 90s punk rock, does it get much better than this? This album is clean, concise and right to the point, hitting you with meaningful lyrics and damn good guitar riffs. Standouts on the album are the cover of Johnny Cash's Ring of Fire and the SD classic Ball and Chain. In addition to those radio friendly songs, Story of My Life and It Could've Been Me are also top notch songs. If you are a bit of a punk historian or just interested in early 90s rock, I would recommend checking this out.
