  • Quitting Netflix

    2

Because Jake is whining about me not updating my site (Note: I would link to Jake's blog, but he doesn't have one), I am posting about getting rid of Netflix. As you may have noticed, I have not posted a review for awhile. This is because I havn't watched any movies from there in about a month. I reviewed my list of movies I had coming and none sounded that great. I was just adding movies on there because I had to put something up there. I decided it wasn't worth it anymore if there wasn't anything I really wanted to see, so I decided to quit. For all of you who cherished my reviews, they may come back in the future when I get more time to watch movies. For now, they must go away. Long live the Netflix reviews.

BTW, if anyone is wondering, I highly recommend the Netflix service if you are looking to watch a lot of movies. It worked great for me. Do not take my quitting as a reflection of their service, it is great.

For all you Mac users out there, I would recommend this story. It is an interesting perspective on building new software and what the new version of Safari means for RSS on Macs.

  • Visit Home Last Weekend

    0

This last weekend, Bek and I went to Chicago to visit my family. It was a nice time, but rather busy with meals, going to Ikea and watching the Hawks beat up on OSU in hi-def. The main bummer from the weekend was that I lost my cell phone and I am pretty sure that some worker at Outback now has it. This is unfortunate as now I have to spend my hard earned cash on a new phone. Tonight I am going to go to the AT&T Wireless store here in town and see if I can get a deal or something.

On a cooler note, I did go to Ikea for the first time in my life this weekend. It is a really impressive store with lots of nice stuff for affordable prices. I found an entertainment center that I loved, but there was no way for me to get it home, so I was sad. However, it does mean that I have to go back sometime and get it, which gives me another excuse to go there. That was about it for the weekend though, good times were had by all. And if my brother ever reads this, no, they didn't replay that call.

  • Revised Political Rant

    2

I realize my last rant was a little over the top and could be seen as offensive to some. Unfortunately I did this a little bit on purpose to illicit a response from people backing Bush since I did not get a response my first time. This meant that I stepped on some toes that I probably shouldn't have, and also exaggerated my opinions a little. For this I apologize, I should have been honest about my choice instead of inflammatory. Because of this, I feel I should port my true feelings about the election:

My primary concern with any election is the environment. Growing up outside Chicago, I saw the land around my dad's house go from being prairie with a 2 lane gravel road to a paved 2 lane road to having a shopping mall built less than 5 minutes away, to having the roads all become paved, then a grocery store built behind my dad's house, to now having shopping centers built a long a 4 lane road. This happened in a 25 year span 23 miles west of Chicago. This is one of the reasons I love being in Iowa now. While there is growth around Iowa City, I can still get away from the urban area within a matter of minutes. I can also breathe nice clean air. I drive back to Chicago now and when you get to DeKalb, you see a layer of brown air over Chicago. When I vote for a president, I am looking for someone who is going to work at making this environment better. When I see what happened around my dad's house occurred in 25 years, I wonder what type of air my children are going to grow up with here in Iowa, or how bad the air will be for then when I visit my family outside Chicago. President Bush is doing little to work towards moving off of the oil that we are dependant on. I will admit to being personally interested in the sciences, so I would like to see more funds put into the alternative fuel research so we can get new technologies to move off of the oil dependence we have. Unfortunately I think that the oil companies have such pull with the President and his backers, I do not think he can move the money where I would like it to be. This means that I have a choice between someone who will definitely not research these possibilities or someone who might. While these are not the best options for me, I have to go with the person who might do it.

The next issue I have is with jobs, especially in the IT profession. Too many of my friends with degrees are struggling to find IT jobs because major companies are sending jobs overseas because they can find workers there who will work for much less. The loopholes that these companies are using make it harder for people such as myself, Rebekah, Jake, etc to find a good job after graduation. While a number of jobs are on the rise across the nation, IT jobs are not. Kerry has said that he will close these loopholes to at least even the playing field, while Bush has not said anything on the issue. Again, these are not the best options, but I have to go with the man who will at least try to help someone like myself and my friends.

These are the reasons I am voting for Kerry. I am well aware of the other issues in this election, but I feel the need to vote for what is best for me and the people I care about. These two main issues are why I am choosing Kerry over Bush. The other stuff out there is still important, I am not discounting that, but these two issues are what are important to me.

  • Lyon Opera Ballet

    0

Last evening Rebekah and I went to Hancher to see the Lyon Opera Ballet. I had gotten free tickets for my new employment at the University with my benefits, so we went out on the grey, rainy evening to take in some culture. The first movement was an interesting piece that had about 12 dancers on the stage at all times. They all had grey bodysuits on an entirely grey stage and set. Intertwined with the minimalist set was maximum dancing with all dancers on stage moving most of the time. This contrast proved interesting as the music was melodic and industrial sounding at once. Also, the dancers had very harsh abrupt dances but used flowing, controlled, graceful movements to perform them. The whole movement proved to be an exercise in contrast with the conclusion coming out with a dancer dressed like Marilyn Monroe but with ugly lipstick and overdone makeup. With this dancer, the contrast was completed and the piece was over.

The second movement was another more modern piece with near electronic drum and bass music on a dark stage. The dark stage was highlighted by stage lights on few sections of the set. The dancers used these lights to expose only parts of their dancing. There was a part of the piece where the dancers only put their arms into the light showing an intertwining that left to your imagination what the dancers were doing in the shadows. The highlight of this piece was the number of lifts and moving between the lifts. These showcased a number of the dancers strengths as they moved between lifts, landings and into another lift while moving between 3 dancers. I really enjoyed this movement because of the dancing with the style of music. As Rebekah said, a number of companies would try this piece with a hacked up classical piece and it just doesn't work. The music combined with the set and dancing really came together for me.

The third movement was my least favorite, mainly because it was less modern in appearance. The dancing was a little more classical without the jerky, graceful moves. The music was a classical piece by Stravinsky, Symphony of Psalms, which is a very dramatic piece. The dancing was mostly appropriate, but I expected bigger moves during some of more dramatic parts of the piece. I still enjoyed this movement, but it just seemed a little lacking after the first two movements.

Overall I really enjoyed the performance. I had not been to Hancher before, so I was impressed with the setup there. The theater itself was a little blah, but the outside is very impressive. All in all, it was a great time.
