  • Processes Coming to Completion

    3

After over 2 weeks of trials and tribulations, I have license plates. I let the government agency talk with the bank and car dealer and things got resolved, so I am $650 lighter, but 100% legal. I also have my parking pass for the University now, so there are no more concerns about finding a spot in the morning. And after the car insurance switch into my name, I think that I am finally done with getting stuff done with the car.

Now I just have to get my checking account closed with Commercial Federal and I should be all set with my finances as well. I also have a new retirement plan setup with the extra money, so everything appears to be all set for me. Now I just have to wait a couple of months of savings and paying off bills and I can start getting some stuff for myself. Oh yeah, Rebekah might get some presents as well, we will have to see if she is good.

One of the first movies from the Coen Brothers (Fargo, The Big Lebowski) , this movie stars Nicholas Cage as an ex-con who marries a cop. Holly Hunter plays Cage's wife who is barren and is desparate for a child. They decide to steal a baby from a couple that has had quintuplets and anarchy ensues. There is also the subplot of Cage's buddies, played by John Goodman and William Forsythe, from lockup escaping prison and needing a place to stay. Subtle humor carries the story along in typical Coen Brothers style, if you enjoy their movies, you will enjoy this film as well.

  • Trials and Tribulations of Getting a License Plate

    0

I bought a new car on August 13th to much delight. The car is great, runs like a dream, has all the features I wanted, I love the car. What I don't love is the issues I am running into while trying to get license plates. Let me first describe how the process should have worked:

CarMax sends the title to Johnson County with my name on it. I go to Johnson County and buy license plates. Johnson County sends the title to the leinholder.

That is it, everything should be done in the background and I just get plates. Here is how it is currently going:

I went to Johnson County last week to get my plates and they told me they had not received any information from CarMax, so I would have to contact CarMax to have them send the info to Johnson County. I call CarMax to give them the information to find out that they have already sent my title out to the U of Iowa Credit Union, my leinholder. CarMax does fax me a copy of the title and the form moving the title to my name however, and tells me that will be enough to get the plates. Now why I have to talk between CarMax and Johnson County, I do not know. It was fairly irritating since neither group wants to accept responsibility, but that is fine.

Today I go into Johnson County with the forms, ready to get my plates. Right away the person tells me that these forms are no good and that they need the actual title. I then tell them that CarMax sent them to the Credit Union, to which the lady tells me that I would need to contact the Credit Union to get the title and bring it in to get plates. I get quite angry with her because CarMax and Johnson County are telling me two very different things and they refuse to talk to each other. However, I leave without blowing the place up and call the Credit Union when I get back to work. I ask if I can get a copy of the title to get plates, to which they say that Johnson County would have to request the title from the Credit Union and they cannot give it to me in person. I confirm that Johnson County, which has no idea I bought a car except for my two visits, is supposed to contact the Credit Union to request a copy of the title. They said yes, not realizing how absurd this sounds.

I call back Johnson County, to request that they request my title to hold onto so I can go in there and get my plates. The lady at Johnson County, which was the same person I talked to when I went in there today, was hesitant to contact the Credit Union because she knows my name will not be on the title and it will cause a problem. I told her that I am aware of that, but if she could please request it to at least get the process in motion, I would appreciate it. She said she would contact the Credit Union and talk to them finally. I am really really hoping that these three groups can figure out what they need to figure out because I am real tired being in the middle of their mess. It sounds like it is all in their hands now, but we will see.

  • Gangs of New York

Mattbot (http://www.asstastic.org) raved about this movie when it first came out, and being a history major, I can sort of see why. This movie portrays an unfamiliar place and time in American history. When we all learn about the Civil War in high school, we never hear about anywhere else in the country besides the South. This movie portrays New York City in the middle of the war being torn apart by immigrants, lawlessness, politians and the impending draft.

The main focus of the movie is Amsterdam Vallon, whose father was killed in a street battle by Bill the Butcher when he was 6. Amsterdam gets out of an orphanige and heads straight back to where his father lives and is not recognized save for a few people. He then joins Bill the Butcher's gang and works his way up to his right hand man in an effort to take him out for revenge for his father's death. I won't go into too much more as not to ruin the movie, but I will say that Daniel Day-Lewis was amazing as Bill the Butcher and really made the movie for me. Leo DiCaprio performed his role admirably, but was nothing to write home about. I will also note that this is a very violent movie, so if you get queasy at all, you may want to avoid some parts of the movie.

  • Mo Money, Mo Problems

It has been awhile since I have posted about life stuff. Things have been on the upswing, I got the job at the Help Desk which has benefits and more money, I now have a new car because of the accident, I have a wonderful girlfriend, things are pretty good. But because of my nature, it seems that I cannot just be content for too long, and with being stressed about getting all this little stuff done for the car, insurance and settling things with the old car, I have been a bit high strung.

Then came along the fish tank thing which I will not go into detail about. Let's just say there was some miscommunication, some overracting on my part and I now have a fish tank in my apartment. Long story short, the water in Coralville has a very high PH, so a couple of the fish have bit it already. My guess is that this is a little bit of karma coming and biting me on the ass, but I am going to get the PH taken care of and then start with a wicked cool fish tank from home. When I get it all setup, I will take pictures of it. The important thing is, I realized that I was too high strung for a few days and am now slowing down. This is always a busy time of year with work, and I don't need to be putting more stress on myself and others.
