  • I Am Trying to Break Your Heart: A Film About Wilco

    0

I will admit to "poo-poo"-ing Yankee Hotel Foxtrot the first time I heard it, but as the Rolling Stone's magazine nerd said in this movie, it is an album that you have to be willing to sit down and listen to to really enjoy it. I kinda think the same thing could be said about this movie, although I was in the mood to see it last night and was still a little disappointed. The story of Wilco during the making of this album could be really well done, unfortunately the director seems to think that we need 6 live performances throughout the movie to make it move along.

For instance, one of the band members is kicked out of the band after the record was made. Now there were some moments where there were some disagreements earlier in the movie, but I would not have thought that the member would have been kicked out. Then we go into 30 minutes of the history of record labels and how Wilco "beat the system." I don't blame Wilco for the quality of the film, there are some really touching moments in the film that come through. I am just upset that there is so much of the music instead of the plot.

  • Pirates of the Caribean

I had wanted to see Pirates in the theater, but I never got around to it. I decided to get it through Netflix, but was hesitant to see it because it is almost 2 1/2 hours long Lluckily my dad had a copy and since I had some free time at home, so I watched it then. Needless to say, I was pretty surprised at how good this movie was. Everyone had told me how great it was, but I was still a little skeptical.

For being a fairly action filled movie, it had a good plot and enough twists to keep you interested. Loosely based on the ride at Disneyland, we have undead pirates trying to find peace, we have a nice love story and lots of pirate fighting. Although I have no idea what they are gonna do for a sequel, it should be good because Johnny Depp has signed on, and he was simply amazing in his role. In any case, I would go on about this film, but you should just see it for yourself because it is that good.

  • X-Mas Cartoon

For those of you looking for a good X-mas cartoon before the holidays, I would recommend both A Very Special Family Guy Freakin' Christmas off of the second volume of the Family Guy DVD and XMas Story off of the second season of Futurama.

The Family Guy episode was written during the second season and was deemed too inappropriate to view in the normal time slot, so when it was finally shown, many people missed it. However, the few of us who were at Joe's Place that evening will remember reading the subtitles and laughing our asses off at it.

As for the Futurama episode, you have an evil Santa, Bender dancing and a special appearance by Conan O'Brien, so it can't be all bad. And if you have the DVD, like you should, the commentary is some of the funniest I have ever heard.

  • A Mighty Wind

From the makers of Best in Show, we have A Mighty Wind. A Mighty Wind is another "mock-umentary" about the world of folk music, 35 years after it's prime. While the movie has some hilarious moments, it also surprises with some emotional moments. While this leads to a less amusing movie overall, I think it leaves a better taste in your mouth afterwards. Not quite what I expected, but a good movie none the less.

  • Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines

The first movie I rented from Netflix was pretty good. I was a bit sceptical going into it as I enjoyed Terminator 2 and it had been 10 years for the next one to come out. While it wasn't as dark and intense as the second one, I still thought it was entertaining. The new villian, the T-X was interesting and rather easy on the eyes. The special effects were well done, although there were times when I could see the CG parts. The plot was good and did well to explain how it fit in with the first two movies, something I was worried about. Overall, I was impressed and am looking forward to the sequel which might be the movie many have been wanting to see, the War against the Machines.
