  • Updates at the speed of Oculon

    0

Well, it has been awhile since I have added any comments up here, mainly cause I spent about a week on the shelf with this god awful sore throat. Now mostly better, and with the Cubs keepin me ridin high, I am happy to announce that I am back. And after looking at Mattbot's blog, I will now give my 4 reasons the Cubs will win in 4. Please note, I did not read any of Mattbot's reasons, so if there are any similarities, it is just cause great minds think alike.

    1 - The Pitching Rotation

With winning on Saturday and having Estes pitch last week, Dusty got real lucky. With Wood, Zam and Prior ready for the first three games, I look for the Cubs to take 2 of 3, then have Clement finish off the Braves in Game 4. With experience in a closing game, Clement should not feel the pressure that one of the other 3 might.

    2 - Pitching vs. Batting

Year after year, we see great batting get into the playoffs, but every year, they get knocked out in favor of good pitching. Atlanta made it in with good hitting this year, their pitching is not nearly what it once was. Because of this, I see the Cubs shutting down the Atlanta bats and advancing.

    3 - Short Series Schedule

With the first 2 games in Atlanta, the Cubs only need to win one and the series won't need to go back there again. I like the Cubs to win both of their home games, so all it will take is winning one in Atlanta.

4 - Dusty seems to know how to manage

With all the bitching and moaning people have done about Dusty this year, he has made a 69 win team into an 88 win team and is in the playoffs. He knows how to win, and when going against 136 year old Bobby Cox, I think I would prefer to have Dusty on my side.

So feel free to argue with my musings, but you know, you will be wrong.

Formula 1 - "anything else is a step down"

Well, in one week's time, the greatest spectacle in motor sports for the US arrives in Indy. This is no Daytona or Indy 500, this is the US Grand Prix, showcasing the best cars and drivers in the world. If you like motorsports at all, you owe it to yourself to watch this race. With the closest championship for the drivers and constructors in recent history, this will be a huge race. Tune in on Speed Channel (Channel 42 in the Iowa City area) at 12:30 PM, Sunday September 28.

  • Musings about the Cubs

    0

So, as good as the Cubs have done this year, I have some ideas to improve the team further for next year. With the trades made this year, the Cubs have some options for next year, here are my thoughts:

Drop Alou and move Simon to left - Doing this will allow Alou to become the DH in the AL he should be and it keeps Simon on the team. The Cubs need a guy who will make contact, and although Simon's strike zone is eyes to toes, at least he doesn't strike out.

Drop Karros and move Choi to 1st - This will not only get rid of an aging star, but will allow Choi a full season to play first and show what he can do.

Drop Lofton for Patterson - This is a no brainer, Lofton was a band-aid for this year.

Sign Miguel Tajada to play short - This one probably won't happen cause of costs, but I can hope

So, with these changes, I would make the following Cubs lineup:

    Patterson
    Gruncrap
    Sosa
    Tajada
    Simon
    Choi
    Ramirez
    Catcher
    Pitcher

I also say the Cubs should keep A-Gonz, he is a great fielder and a good defensive sub. If the Cubs to not go after Tajada, then they can use the money they save on Karros, Alou and Lofton to go after some decent relief pitching as well. Feel free to comment!

I have added comments back to the blog. This pops up a new window in which to edit, unlike the inline one last time. This one reads a little easier, looks like mattbot had it right the first time.
